What is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)? On a regular wind turbine the blades are horizontal to the wind. A vertical axis turbine has blades that face the wind horizontally.

VAWT has a few advantages; the biggest one is that a vertical axis turbine is more suitable for lower wind speed. With a vertical turbine you can get the same power production as a regular turbine, but you can accomplish it in areas where average wind speeds is lower than 15 MPH.

This simple advantage makes a vertical axis wind turbine suitable for more people than a regular design. You still need wind to spin the turbine, but with a vertical design you can adjust your blade design to capture more wind and produce power even when the wind is blowing at only 8 MPH.

Want to make your own VAWT? There are the materials you'll need:
  • 2 bicycle rims - 22 inch
  • 3 PVC pipes - 4 inches by 10 feet
  • 1 treadmill motor - ebay - $20
  • 18 screws to screw the blades to the rims
  • 2x4's as required for building the frame (4 - 8 ft long)
  • 2x6 - to mount the treadmill motor
  • 6 inch post bracket - hang top bicycle rim
  • V belt - length dependant on setup (79 ")
  • cover for motor (plastic 2 gal pail)

Misconceptions About Hydrogen Car Kits

As the innovative hydrogen car kits are now entering the mainstream there is a huge amount of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) being flung around. Whether you are interested in purchasing such a system or not it’s really worth to know the facts:

Fake Fact Number 1:

Hydrogen car kits sellers say that these burn water. This is nonsense and thus this whole movement is just a hype movement.

Answer:

Hydrogen car kits do not burn water, because yes, that’s impossible. What they do is that they use the car battery to split the water into its components hydrogen and oxygen and use the resulting HHO gas or brown gas as it is called.


Fake Fact Number 2:

Hydrogen car kits can’t be useful. They spend more energy in splitting the water than they do from actually burning the resulting stuff. It’s basic physics.

Answer:

If this is what hydrogen car kits would be actually doing, you’d be right. However the hydrogen gas is used as an additive which greatly improves the efficiency of the gasoline burning process. Basically, the mix burns faster and thus a much smaller amount of energy is dissipated as heat and converted into useful energy.

Fake Fact Number 3:

If this hydrogen thing would be really working then the car manufacturers would’ve used it a long time ago.

Answer:

This is just blatantly false. Car manufacturers are very conservative in their designs. Diesel engines for example, which are much more efficient than standard ones have been with us almost for as long as cars themselves, yet they are still in minority. We don’t want to point any fingers here, but when these manufacturers compare the benefits of an improved design with the cost of modifying their assembly lines, the cost aware argument usually wins.

Fake Fact Number 4:

The price for the components of these hydrogen car kits must be huge.

Answer:

This is again blatantly false. These systems were invented by people just like you and me who were passionate about making a difference. This means that they had low budgets and they had access only to off the shelve components. This is a grassroots movement and the cost really does reflect this.

Fake Fact Number 5:

If these hydrogen car kits really are this good, wouldn’t the government support them? There is absolutely no help from the government in this direction, which means that these things are absolutely useless.

Answer:

You have reached a painful truth. Indeed, the government is not supporting such innovations, but not because these hydrogen car kits do not deserve, but rather because there are no huge corporate interests and lobbyists behind them. The only initiative of this type that the government is supporting is the ethanol fuel...

There is an eBook package called Earth 4 Energy. Previously this one was in top spot, but with Green Power Easy coming to market it got beat out (by far).

The Earth 4 Energy package again consists of both eBooks and videos that work to teach you how to convert your home. The material is clearly laid out (although not quite as well as Green Power Easy) and the instructions are simple to follow.

When we tested the components that we built using this system the power generated by the solar panels and the windmill did match that of our winner.

The only complaint I had about this package was its focus. While Green Power Easy teaches you how to build and implement an alternative energy system for an entire home, this one focuses more on the individual components. It does get into converting the whole home, but it isn't explained as well as with our winner.

Reducing Your Energy Needs before Going Green
With simple instructions on how to convert to homemade wind power or DIY solar panels for as little as $200, many people are taking the alternative energy more seriously. When choosing to take on a DIY conversion project the first question most people ask is will one windmill or one large solar panel be enough?

There are too many factors involved here.But one way to start is to ensure your home is efficient in the first place. In this article we will walk you through some steps that will help you reduce your energy consumption before you start converting your home. 

Reducing Your Energy Needs

One often overlooked step in converting a home to green power is reducing your energy needs in the first place. The average home uses inefficient lighting, power hungry appliances, and poor heating/cooling solutions.  An important step to reducing your energy needs is to look at the inefficiencies in your current system.

Consider:

   1. Replacing old incandescent bulbs with fluorescent or led bulbs will cut your power consumption from light in half (and you pollute less too!).  

   2. Replacing old, inefficient, appliances may reduce your energy bills by as much as 30% by itself.

You should also look at your current heating/cooling solutions. For example an electric hot water heater could potentially be replaced by a solar water heater. Maybe that inefficient air conditioner can be replaced with a more efficient heat exchanger.

Spend some time looking through that guide and calculating how much you can reduce your power consumption in different areas of your home.  By simply taking a look at everything in your home that consumes energy, you will find ways to reduce your energy needs before you start.

You don’t have to go all out and spend $10,000 replacing everything – but things as simple as changing your lighting will reduce your energy needs before you start your conversion project.
